On April 26, Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) at the China National Convention Center (CNCC) in Beijing, and delivered a keynote speech titled “Working Together to Deliver a Brighter Future For Belt and Road Cooperation”. He emphasized that the joint pursuit of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has provided new opportunities for countries around the world and created new space for China’s opening-up and development. Going forward, we need to be guided by the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, pursue open, green and clean cooperation, and pursue high standard cooperation to improve people’s lives and promote sustainable development so as to jointly promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.
President Xi Jinping announced that China will take a series of major reform and opening-up measures to boost higher quality opening-up. We will expand market access for foreign investment in more areas, intensify efforts to enhance international cooperation in intellectual property protection, increase the import of goods and services on an even larger scale, more effectively engage in international macro-economic policy coordination, and work harder to ensure the implementation of opening-up related policies.
Vice Premier of the State Council Han Zheng presided over the opening ceremony.
Chairman and Party Secretary of COSCO SHIPPING Capt. Xu Lirong also attended the opening ceremony and listened to President Xi’s speech before participating in the high-level session of the forum.
During the session, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said that Greece shares a common goal with BRI and hopes to deepen the cooperation with China in all dimensions through BRI. He particularly mentioned that the investment of COSCO SHIPPING in the Port of Piraeus is highly important in that it will turn Piraeus or even Greece into the gateway to Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea. It is an excellent example of the Belt and Road construction.
At an earlier time, Capt. Xu Lirong attended the Belt and Road CEO Conference on the morning of April 25. On the afternoon of the same day, he was present at the thematic forum on infrastructure connectivity with the theme “Safety, Smoothness, Intelligence and Efficiency”. The participating guests of the session spoke highly of the significant results achieved through infrastructure connectivity under BRI. They believed that all parties engaged in infrastructure connectivity ever since the first BRF have benefited from such cooperation and entered a new stage of all-round practical cooperation. Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING Yu Zenggang attended the thematic forum on people-to-people connectivity on the morning of the same day.
On the sidelines of the forum, Capt. Xu Lirong also met with important business partners of COSCO SHIPPING, including Group CEO of PSA Mr. Tan Chong Meng, Managing Director of Pacific International Lines (PIL) Mr. Teo Siong Seng, Chairman of PAO NOVATEK Mr. Leonid Mikhelson, CEO of Sovcomflot Mr. Sergey Ottovich Frank, and Chairman of Volcan Mr. José Picasso. They exchanged views on future business cooperation and development.
As an important carrier that plays a leading role in the Belt and Road construction, the shipping industry shoulders a historical mission of building maritime trading routes and expanding the logistic corridor that links “One Belt” with “One Road”. As the world’s largest shipping company, COSCO SHIPPING has fully participated in the Belt and Road construction. So far, it has opened up 174 container liner routes and allocated transport capacity of 1.614 million TEU along the Belt and Road. In addition, it has invested in 18 terminals in the Belt and Road regions, while continuously increasing investments in sea-rail inter-modal transport and international block train service between Asia and Europe. It has also advanced the construction of the China-Europe Land-Sea Express Line based on the Greek Port of Piraeus and opened up a new logistics passage between China and East Europe in the hinterland of Central and Western Europe.
Over the past five years, COSCO SHIPPING has developed an effective network with terminals as the “connecting dots”, shipping routes as the “links” and logistics as an “extension” along the Belt and Road. With a focus on the entire logistics supply chain, COSCO SHIPPING has provided the pivots and bonds for trade flows of the countries and regions involved in the BRI, thus becoming a remarkable symbol of China along the Belt and Road.
